Don’t let burnout drag your organization down

SETC Southeastern Theatre ConferenceThis week is the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) in Mobile, AL and as I was thinking about the theatres that participate in this fun event each year, my mind went to ways that our system can help these organizations.  One of the biggest challenges any non-profit arts organization faces is employee and volunteer burnout, and one of the best ways to combat it is through automation and organization.

Press Release: Tim Curtis joins the Client Services Team

James Dixon, Portland Actor, Director, Radio host and Social Justice worker joins the Arts People Client Services Team

James DixonJames Dixon has joined the Arts People Client Services team, bringing a variety of experiences with him in performance, directing, radio and social justice work. James is a radio host for KBOO in Portland, hosting their Stage and Studio program, is a co-producing company member with Theatre Vertigo and a stage director. On the social justice side, he is an intersectional equity facilitator with a primary focus on LGBTQ, gender, race, and sex positive issues in various social and arts communities.

James says, “After leaving my full time position at Portland Center Stage a year ago I made a firm decision of what my purpose was in the arts community at large… I love challenging work that doesn’t necessarily attempt to change the world, but sparks conversations and gives people something to chew on when they leave the theater.”

Arts People’s staff, deeply rooted in the arts

Arts People, from its very beginning, looked to experienced arts creators and administrators to staff its ranks.  We wanted to make sure that the people who would be guiding the development of our product, designed specifically for the very particular needs of the performing arts, would know how to give it the power and flexibility required for the industry.  In addition, the client services team and other members have also frequently come from backgrounds that include arts participation. Podcast: Spike speaks with Eric Guerin about the stagecraft of flying actors, and the safety concerns involved

I sat down today to talk with Eric Guerin, who’s a new member of our Client Services staff here at Arts People.  Eric comes to us from the Brighton Center where he was Theatre Director.  In his role there, he recently was part of the creative team of a production with high school students that involved flying two of the actors on stage.  In this podcast we discuss the challenges, concerns and intricacies of flying actors on a theatre stage, and also the overall challenges of creating highly theatrical and exciting productions, while still maintaining strict control over safety.

PODCAST: Spike interviews Sarah about lille aeske & boutique performance spaces

I sat down with Sarah Farrell Mackessy of our client services team to talk about her boutique performance space in Boulder Creek, CA.

Originally a gallery to feature her husband’s woodworking business and skills combined with artist gallery space, lille aeske (little box) has quickly become a popular performing arts venue for live music with artists passing through the area from LA to SF and back.

Sarah talks with us about how the idea developed and how popular it’s become, both with patrons in their small town and also with artists who love the intimacy of the tiny space.
